CDOT Parking Signs Design Guidelines

Charlotte, North Carolina

The City of Charlotte DOT had several challenges managing curb lane use (parking and no parking zones) in its uptown urban core. Rather than installing more signs the city under the direction of Kimley Horn Associates and Dawa, Inc. performed an extensive study to understand priorities for curb lane use, communication challenges and implications to vehicular traffic on the street and adjoining pedestrian traffic on the sidewalks.

After priorities were set, Dawa explored graphic layouts and created symbols to enhance user’s comprehension of parking regulations presented on curb lane signage. The City settled on a program that uses MUTCD standard colors, new and existing symbols and consistent placement of sequential time contingent parking regulations.
